Cookbook KDP Formatting: UK Author’s Guide
Self-publishing a cookbook on Amazon KDP requires layout decisions specific to the genre — decisions that affect spine math, royalty per copy, reader experience, and (most importantly) whether your file clears KDP’s automated review on the first attempt. This guide gives the formatting recipe most cookbook authors should follow, plus the specific pitfall the genre is most likely to trip over.

- Trim: 7" x 10" or 8" x 10" (cookbook standard); 8.5" x 11" for full-photo coffee-table
- Paper: White, premium colour interior (cream is wrong for cookbooks — colour reproduction needs the white base)
- Body font: Modern sans-serif (Avenir, Proxima Nova, Source Sans Pro) at 10-11pt for recipes; serif for narrative interludes
- Chapter heading font: Display serif or hand-lettered look for chapter heads at 28-36pt
- Spacing: 1.35 spacing, left-aligned (not justified — ingredient lists look wrong justified)
- Typical page count: commonly 160-240 pages (a general guideline, not a rule)
Why these defaults are the right starting point
The 7" x 10" trim is the cookbook industry standard for a reason — it’s what trad-published cookbook books use, so it’s what readers expect to feel in their hands. Deviating from the genre standard isn’t always wrong, but it’s a deliberate decision that needs a reason: maybe you’re producing a limited-run hardcover with a different feel, or your book has unusual layout requirements. For 95% of authors in cookbook, the standard trim wins.
The paper choice — White, premium colour interior (cream is wrong for cookbooks — colour reproduction needs the white base) — affects the reader’s perception of the book as much as any cover decision. White paper works for cookbooks because it reproduces colour photography sharply and brightly; cream paper is usually reserved for text-heavy prose, which is why it is the wrong choice here.
The Cookbook-specific pitfall
Premium colour interior on KDP is significantly more expensive per page than B&W. A colour cookbook costs the author considerably more per page to print than a B&W book. Layout notes for cookbook books
Recipe layout is the heart of cookbook design. Ingredients lists need to be visually distinct from instructions — typically a left-aligned column for ingredients and right-aligned column for instructions, or ingredients above and instructions below with clear hierarchy. Photography should be at 300 DPI and either full-page or 2/3 page; small recipe photos almost always look amateur. Index by ingredient + by recipe name + by dietary tag (vegan, gluten-free) — many modern cookbooks include three index types.

Your spine width is determined by page count × paper thickness. At KDP’s standard rates:

Gutter (inside) margin by page count
KDP requires a wider gutter as page count grows — the spine of a thicker book swallows more of the page, so the text needs to start further from the binding. The minimum gutter values for cookbook books:
- Under 150 pages: 0.375" (9.5 mm) minimum
- 151-300 pages: 0.500" (12.7 mm) minimum
- 301-500 pages: 0.625" (15.9 mm) minimum
- 501-700 pages: 0.750" (19.1 mm) minimum
- 701-828 pages: 0.875" (22.2 mm) minimum

Pre-upload checklist for cookbook formatting
- Trim size in your document matches your chosen KDP trim exactly
- Mirror margins enabled (inside/outside, not left/right)
- Gutter set at or above the KDP minimum for your final page count
- Body font embedded — every glyph, including italics and bold variants
- Page count is even (add a blank page at the back if odd — an even count is a design convention, not a KDP upload requirement)
- Chapter starts use proper page breaks (not multiple Enter presses)
- Front matter (title, copyright, dedication, TOC) uses Roman numerals or no numbering
- Body pages number from 1 starting at the first chapter
- PDF exported as PDF/X-1a:2001 with “Embed All Fonts” enabled

Cover guidance for cookbook books
Cover decisions are out of scope for this formatting guide, but two things matter at the formatting stage:
- Spine text minimum: KDP requires a minimum page count (around a 0.2" spine) before allowing spine text; the exact threshold varies by paper type, so check KDP’s current cover specs. Most cookbooks clear this comfortably.
- Spine text alignment: Your cover designer will need the final spine width in millimetres or inches once your manuscript is locked. Send them the exact page count + paper type + trim, and they’ll calculate the spine.
